In October 2010, in partnership with Shangrilah Alpacas, we purchased the Alcazar Suri Stud®.

After eleven years of work towards the development of the suri breed, with the abiding objective of Keeping the Suri Pure®, Brenton Spehr and Pierre Baychelier achieved remarkable results with their Alcazar Suri Stud®. From very humble beginnings with plain looking animals, they developed a white suri herd with a reputation for large size, strong frame, correct conformation and hardiness - without compromising the important fleece characteristics of lustre, handle, density and length.

 In 2010 Pierre and Brenton decided that the final step in the refining of the herd should be someone else’s project – and we feel very privileged to be that “someone” entrusted with taking the herd forward.

There are very few breeders in Australia focussing only on white suri; as two of this small group, Birrong Suri Alpacas and Shangrilah Alpacas have developed a close relationship over several years. We are now able to take this a step further by becoming partners in the joint ownership of the Alcazar Suri Stud® .  With our mutual passion for the genetic advancement of the suri breed, and the complementary genetics in our existing herds, we believe the combination of Alcazar, Birrong and Shangrilah is a perfect match.

Some of the core group of females reside at “Shangrilah”, in the Northern NSW Tablelands, whilst the remainder run with the Birrong Suri Alpaca herd in the Southern Highlands of NSW.  The Alcazar herd, however, functions as one with stud males moving between the two sites.

We are all very excited about the future evolution of the Alcazar herd – the synergy between Alcazar, Birrong and Shangrilah is overwhelming and augurs well for the future.
